MRL undertakes fire safety work in Saudi Arabia
MRL Safety were contracted by Dubai-based Filmmaster Events to produce a Fire Safety Management Plan and provide a Fire Safety Consultant for the inauguration ceremony of the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Thuwel, Saudi Arabia in September 2009.
The ceremony was to take place in three very large temporary structures that would take three months to build in the searing desert heat. Due to the complexities of the build and event, and the lack of solid guidance and legislation in the Middle East, MRL advised that it would be best to base all health, safety and fire advice on UK best practice and previous knowledge within the event industry.
MRL worked hand in hand with Filmmaster Events and the Loss Prevention Management Team of Saudi Aramco, the world’s biggest oil company, to ensure the fire safety of over 4000 attendees. This, coupled with the fact that King Abdullah himself was the guest of honour and was accompanied by over 60 dignitaries from around the world, including Prince Andrew, was set to be a challenge. John spent 10 days in Saudi Arabia and, while still trying to remove the sand from his toes, said: “the inauguration ceremony went without a hitch and was a great success. It was good to work with people from different cultures and to try to understand how others approach safety issues.”
