Case Study: Live 8

Planning for very large crowd events is usually undertaken over many months, however the concept of Live 8 was born and delivered within just a few weeks.

Client: Clear Channel Entertainments and The Royal Parks
MRL Lead: Phil Storr
Date: Saturday 2nd July 2005

Key Features:

MRL Limited worked closely with its clients, Clear Channel Entertainments and The Royal Parks (TRP), in producing event safety documentation and offering operational safety advice both directly to Clear Channel Entertainments and TRP as well as to the Safety Advisory Group. As a different event occurred the weekend before in Hyde Park there was a very short timeframe to change the site to accommodate 150,000 people and therefore 24 hour working was introduced. This meant MRL Limited needed to ensure that all contractors worked as safely at three o'clock in the morning as they did at three o'clock in the afternoon. The stakes were high for such a high profile event which was being broadcast live across the globe. And all this a few days before the decision was announced as to which country would host the 2012 Olympics, (in the end it was London!).

On event day MRL Limited provided 4 Event Safety Managers, and managed a fully staffed event control room (ELT) which operated for 20 hours and involved 22 agencies, ranging from the BBC Outside Broadcast to Transport for London as well as the emergency services. In addition, MRL Limited commissioned fire and medical cover, and provided medical management, including the Event Medical Officer, Dr Wayne Dennis, MRL's very own Medical Director.
